Health Ministry has confirmed that the second wave of COVID-19 has hit Uganda as new infections are consistently in triple digits for the last one week.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine said that for the past one week, they have reported over 500 new cases. She added that at least six lives were lost to the disease in a space of one week and Intensive Care Units are feeling the strain.
“Hospitals are receiving overwhelming numbers and majority are youths. ICUs are already full and its worrying,” said Atwine.

According to the permanent secretary, the situation now necessitates another lockdown to break the chain of spread of the virus.

“Some areas especially urban business districts like Kampala, Mukono, Wakiso and Masaka must be locked down otherwise our facilities are getting overwhelmed,” she said.

With President Yoweri Museveni yet to name a new cabinet, Atwine said that an emergency National Taskforce is going to be set up to come up with several recommendations on how to solve the worsening situation.

The ministry urged the public to be more extra vigilant as the new wave is very deadly and terribly affects all ages.
