Director General of Health Services Dr Henry Mwebesa has revealed that the COVID-19 restrictions that were announced by President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday evening are partial and only meant to awaken Ugandans about their personal responsibility in the fight against the deadly virus.

Mwebesa said that for a while government has been telling the public to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) but majority decided to flout them hence leading to the new wave that he claimed is spreading like wild fire.

“We are victims of our own success. All the variants are now here,” said Mwebesa.

Mwebesa anticipates that if the situation does not improve, Museveni may totally lockdown the country before the 42 days.

He said the rising number of cases is overwhelming their infrastructural and man power capacities which might result into a crisis. Museveni closed schools, churches and mosques for 42 days. He also suspended public prayers and all kinds of gatherings

On the high number of people running to the villages, Mwebesa said it’s going to spread the virus further.

“I don’t know why people are running to the villages. There is no lockdown. The adherence to the SOPs in the bus park is very low.

I think people did not get the message well. They are now taking the COVID-19 to the villages. Kampala is certainly the epicentre for COVID-19,” he said.
