Lockdown is still with us for at least some more weeks as government has several targets it has to achieve before it will consider lifting restrictions. Among the main targets is ensuring that infection rate falls.

Chris Baryomunsi, the State Minister for ICT and National Guidance says the positivity rate in Uganda is falling but it’s not yet at a figure where it’s safe to open up again.

“The positivity rate has fallen from 18% to an average of 10%. This is not bad but it is still not good enough. It is still risky. We think it can be more compatible at 5%,” says Baryomunsi.

As of yesterday, Uganda’s positivity rate was at 11.3% after 438 new infections were confirmed from 3888 samples. 909 persons recovered from the coronavirus taking the total number to 62213.

Baryomunsi also reveals that government is also targeting mass vaccination once vaccines are gotten and at least 70% of the population will be vaccinated. So far 1,076, 923 individuals have been vaccinated.

He says relaxation measures will be a balance between livelihood and strict measures to curb Covid-19.
