The State minister in-charge of Transport,  Fred Byamukama has announced a one month grace period to renew expired driving licences, due to bottlenecks caused by the 42-day Covid-19 lockdown.

In this period, Byamukama said police officers will not be arresting motorists with expired permits.

“The exemption is for only motorists whose permits expired during lockdown. We are giving you one month so that by September 1, you have sorted the problem,” Byamukama said during a presser yesterday.

The extension however does not apply to licences which expire from before lockdown as he said motorists are always urged to apply for a new permit several weeks before it actually expires.

“If your permit expired before lockdown, don’t use this opportunity to disturb the officers, instead have it renewed so that you don’t get problems. The same advice goes to those who don’t have permits ,” he said.

The extension also does not apply to vehicle licences. If the licence expired before or during lockdown, penalties will apply when you renew it.

He also cautioned police officers against extorting money from motorists. The minster called upon motorists to report to the relevant authorities police officers who demand for bribes.
