Following the overthrow of the Afghanistan government by the Taliban, thousands of Afghans have been airlifted from the troubled Asian country and Uganda is expected to host over 2000 Afghan refugees on the request of the US government.
According to New Vision, The Ministry of Disaster preparedness and refugees Esther Anyakun, the first batch of the refugees is expected today.
“Our team is ready at the airport, including the health team. Tonight we are expecting 500 Afghans,” Anyakun said.
The Minister told the publication that the refugees will be hosted temporarily at the request of the United States government.
Andrew Nsawotebba, the health manager for test and fly, which is responsible for testing incoming passengers, said the refugees will not be subjected to the mandatory COVID-19 testing since Afghanistan is not listed among the category countries.
The government of Uganda accepted a request from the White House in the USA to host at least 2000 refugees from Afghanistan.
The request was made to President Museveni from his counterpart Joe Biden yesterday before a meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister between US and Ugandan officials was summoned to discuss technicalities.
