The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) is set to recruit more Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel for districts in Central, Eastern, Northern and Mid-western regions of Uganda.

According to UPDF deputy spokesperson Lt Col. Ronald Kakurugu, the exercise is to kick start next month starting with headquarters of UPDF Divisions I, II, III, IV and V in Kakiri barracks, Mbarara, Mbale, Gulu and Pader respectively.

“We are in the process, and the recruitment is to start next month. We want to recruit 10,000 LDUs countrywide and a detailed program will be publicized in the newspapers and other media platforms,” he said.

The recruitment is aimed at enhancing the existing foundation security arrangement in the country to ensure the people and their property are secured at grass root levels.

Recruits will receive four months basic military training from UPDF training schools. Upon completion of their training, the LDUs shall be deployed to serve in their respective districts of recruitment.

The public has had mixed reactions on the behaviours of LDUs with many castigating them of misconduct while on duty.
