Government has dismissed reports that it is planning to settle the 2000 Afghan refugees at Namboole National Stadium.

According to the information Minister, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda still has a lot of free land which can be allocated to the Afghan refugees to set camp.

“It is not true that they are going to be hosted at Namboole. We shall tell you officially when they are arriving and where they will be hosted,” Baryomunsi said.

“Arrangements are still underway and once they have been finalized then we shall communicate officially and you will see them arriving,” he added.

The Minister further defended gov’t’s decision to accept hosting the Afghan refugees saying it’s an African culture to accomodate people that are running out of danger.

“From the moral point of view, if people are running away from danger, it is not African to refuse them and in any case Uganda is known for its hospitality,” he said.

On Tuesday, the disaster preparedness ministry announced that arrangements were on going to receive the 2000 Afghan refugees on request of America after the Taliban seized power.
