The Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga has this afternoon led a section of opposition Members of Parliament out of the Chamber.

Earlier on, several MPs raised concerns about the re-arrest of the two MPs, Hon Allan Ssewanyana and Hon Muhammed Ssegirinya.

Mpuuga demanded to know whether the Office of Speaker, was notified about the re-arrest.

He said it’s unfair for Parliament to conduct business normally, yet some of it’s are under unclear arrest.

Kira Municipality legislator Ssemujju Nganda tried to move a motion for the Speaker to suspend Plenary sittings until the two MPs are released.

However, Speaker Jacob Oulanyah asked Ssemujju to formally notify the Office of the Speaker before moving the motion.

The Speaker also demanded to know the circumstances under which MPs were rearrested.

In response, State Minister for Trade David Bahati requested time to allow the Minister of Internal Affairs to come to Parliament to provide an explanation on the matter.

Oulanyah suspended the House for 15 minutes to allow the Govt Chief Whip Thomas Tayembwa to get the Internal Affairs Minister to come and offer an explanation.

“Unless we get answers to the questions I have asked, we shall not proceed with this sitting,” said Oulanyah.

After elapse of the suspension, the sitting resumed and the Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja told the Speaker that the MPs were being interrogated and will soon be presented before the court.

Similarly, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka said the two MPs will be presented in court.

“They can be arrested as many times as the offenses they commit,” said Kiwanuka.

It is after his comments that Mpuuga led the opposition out of the Chambers.

Speaker Oulanyah reacted saying; “I am not in disagreement with the act of walking out. The option would be to stay and make the situation difficult. I applaud the LOP for the good leadership.”
