MUSEVENI: I don’t understand why politicians are giving more time to criminals than victims

President Yoweri Museveni has vowed not to accept the issue of giving bonds and bail to capital offense suspects especially those accused of murder.

While delivering his national address last evening, Museveni said murder is not like assault and it needs to be prioritized as it is irreversible because someone who has died can’t come back.

“I’m going to discuss with the attorney general to see how we can stop this nonsense on the side of police, on the issue of bail, we shall continue discussing with stakeholders,” said Museveni.

On the recent Masaka murders, Museveni questioned why politicians especially those in the opposition are ‘wasting’ so much time defending the suspects rather than reaching out to the victims.

“People are being killed and you are defending criminals. You are giving more time to the criminals than victims. The victim is dead and cannot ask for bail and you spend your time on criminals! This is not correct,” said Museveni.

He added, “If my party members were among the suspects, I would work hard to prove their innocence instead of asking the police not to arrest them.”

On this week’s incident of opposition MPs walking out of parliament in protest of the re-arrest of their colleagues Allan Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya Muhammed, Museveni laughed it off saying; “So many people in Masaka have been killed and suspects are being bailed out because it’s a “right “, so what about the rights of those being killed? This is totally unacceptable because we didn’t fight so that people are killed with impunity.”

“I was in prison so many times in Tanzania. There is no Tanzanian prison I didn’t go to but don’t you see me here! I got out and did some useful work,” he added.
