Yesterday, the August house moved a motion tabled by Bufumbira East Member of Parliament Hon.Nsaba Buturo highlighting the decline in ethical and moral values in the country and the need to reverse the destructive decline.

While seconding the motion, the former State Minister for Mineral Development Hon Sarah Opendi cited the need to curb corruption in the country adding that Uganda is ranked 142 out of 180 countries that have failed to curb corruption.

She said President Yoweri Museveni is aware of corrupt officials in the different government institutions.

“Museveni knows the corrupt officials but he keeps shifting them from one sector to another. When it comes to corruption, don’t target civil servants but also look at political leaders,” she said.

Opposition Chief Whip Hon. John Nambeshe said that the motion on ethics and integrity is important though it’s the government officials promoting corruption because of their corruption tendencies.

Meanwhile Opposition MP Hon. Asuman Basalirwa opposed the motion on grounds that it has nothing to do with ethics or morals.

“What are the parameters used to measure these levels of immorality? We should stop being alarmists and provide actual figures of the levels,” said Basalirwa.

Early this week, the First Lady Janet Museveni launched the 2021 Anti- corruption Campaign at State House Entebbe Under the theme, Promoting Active Citizen Participation in Social Accountability.

“You can never prosper when you steal. You can’t live in a home constructed with stolen money. Prosperity will come if you’re honest. Treasure that peace in your heart even when the going is hard,” said the First Lady during the launch.
