Four more suspects have been arrested as the hunt for boda-boda cyclists who were part of the mob that beat a former UN staff to death in Mengo, Kampala, continues.

While addressing the press on Monday, police spokesperson Fred Enanga, told the press that 14 suspects who include a policeman, have been arrested thus far.

Detective Constable Dan Kanywani, attached to Naggalama police station, was arrested from a Boda Boda stage in Mengo near the scene where Abdul Aziz Bashir, 40, was killed.

“Kanywani had been transferred from Naggalama to Ngora in Teso, but he was in Kampala riding a Bodaboda,” the source noted, adding that Police are also investigating why he had not reported to his new duty station.

“We wish to inform the public that after a thorough review of the violent road rage incident caught on video and CCTV, involving a group of Boda Boda riders who caused disorders on the road, chased and brutally murdered Aziz Bashir, the police at KMP has so far made 14 arrests of suspects linked to the senseless murder,” Enanga said.

“Expansive efforts are in place to track down more suspects including the initial Boda rider who brushed the victim’s car, those who gave him a chase, and those who subdued and stoned him to death.  We hope the arrests made so far, will serve as a strong lesson to all motorists especially Boda riders, that there are legal consequences to acts of road rage, especially when that rage turns violent,” Enanga warned.

He said police continue to caution all motorists that road rage is real and dangerous to other road users.  “It shows the lack of patience and civility on our roads, where every motorist assumes to be above the traffic laws.”

Enanga also urged all motorists to figure out how to de-escalate tense situations on the roads, before it gets out of control.  As the Joint Security Agencies, he said they would not tolerate such kinds of careless and reckless behavior on the roads.
