The court in Manafwa district has jailed Derrick Kuloba, aged 27, for raping and attempting to murder a 16-year-old girl, Evelyn Namasopo.

Kuloba was convicted last Friday by Manafwa Chief Magistrate Esther Nalungi, and yesterday he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and also ordered to pay Shs50 million as compensation to the family of Namasopo.

Kuloba has been battling the charges since July 2019, when he was arrested for hacking Namasopo’s hand after she fought him off as he rape her.

While speaking to a local television station, Namasopo, a student and a resident of Nakatsi sub-county in Bududa district narrated that she was attacked by Kuloba, armed with a panga, on July 4, 2019, and raped her before chopping off her left hand as she tried to resist.

She further explained that when she returned home with the injuries, her parents rushed to the police and reported the matter, and a hunt for Kuloba was launched until he was arrested and charged with aggravated rape and attempted murder.
