Health experts have come out to caution the public that despite a slight drop in Covid-19 infections as indicated by statistics from the Ministry of Health, the public should remain vigilant and treat every infection they are exposed to cautiously.

Health experts further warn that the public should not ignore cough or flu.

According to health experts, the omicron variant presents with symptoms like a running nose, cough, sore throat, among others.

According to Dr Charles Olaro, the director of curative services at the Ministry of Health, the Omicron variant has since taken over Covid-19 infections in Uganda and globally.

Charles further acknowledged that part of the flu and cough being experienced by sections of the public could be as a result of the ongoing dry spell that provides conditions where both infections can thrive, health experts said that kind of flu does not cause severe illness.

“But if you cough consistently for two weeks even after medication, then you need to run further tests and treatment. The prevalence of Tuberculosis in this country is still high and what you might be suffering from could be TB,” Olaro warned.

In the past week between January 7 and 13, Uganda registered an average of 710 Covid-19 infections. The average death toll of those that succumbed to Covid-19 in the past week was eight, while the average active cases of those admitted in several health facilities were 269.

However, despite the drop in cases, experts have urged the public to religiously follow the standard operating procedures to contain the spread of the disease.

The Omicron virus is highly infectious and will infect a person three days before symptoms manifest. However, health experts said one will be less infectious after seven days and it will eventually disappear after 10 days.
