Today morning, Makerere University was painted with red gowns and police attire as students and law enforcers had running battles at the institution.

The Police overpowered the students as it    arrested majority of them who were protesting against the university’s blended system of teaching.

Yesterday, the university VC Prof Barnabas Nawangwe  came out through his social media to detest the leadership of Shamim Nambasa and the group.

“We have noted misleading messages originating from Makerere Guild leadership regarding the opening of the university. All students and stakeholders are advised that the first semester will open in a staggered manner and using blended methods of teaching and learning,” part of the Nawangwe’s tweet reads.

Nawangwe also shared the academic calendar for the year 2021/2022 which he says must be followed to the dot.

According the calendar, Makerere University will follow a blended system of teaching with priority being given to freshers who will begin their university classes physically as the rest study online.

However, the students have today morning come out and protested against Nawangwe’s tweet.

The students argue that the university should be fully reopened for all students since the economy is now open. Students accuse management of taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to ‘extort’ the learners.
