Social media is awash with news about novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija fleeing to exile.

His lawyer Eron Kiiza confirmed that he fled through Rwanda. However, Kiiza was tightlipped about the destination of his client. But close sources to him indicate that he’s headed to Central Europe, Germany in specific.

Kakwenza is facing charges related to insulting President Yoweri Museveni and his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Kiiza said that Kakwenza fled the country because he feared being tortured again.

Earlier this week, Buganda Road magistrate, Dr. Douglas Singiza declined Kakwenza’s plea to have his passport returned to enable him travel abroad for proper treatment. He said the writer could receive treatment locally.

Following the news of his flying out, Muhoozi has spoken about the situation through his official Twitter handle.

“I don’t know who this young boy is whom they say was beaten! I never heard of him until the media started talking about him. I’ve never met him or talked to him and I have no desire to do so. I have just been speaking to President Paul Kagame and he says he is not in Rwanda!!” Muhoozi said in a tweet.

The author of the Greedy Barbarian was arrested in December 2021 for ‘insulting’ Museveni and Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Twitter.

On January 25, he was released by Buganda Road Court on Shs500,000 cash bail and was barred from talking about the case in the media as doing so would lead to automatic cancellation of his bail.
