The return of Roast & Rhyme was billed to mark the return of festival life after the COVID lockdowns, and the team at Swangz Avenue didn’t disappoint.

The event was packed by 6 pm and traffic lines were still building up as late as 8 pm.

Roast & Rhyme performers are not disclosed until 48 hours before the show, and when the lineup was released last Friday, a few skeptics questioned the choice of artists. The Black Roots band never disappoints with their authentic reggae. Mudra, Elijah Kitaka, and Ziza Bafana all impressed with their reggae ragga showcases.

Vinka also put up a very powerful live performance that reminded us of how she has grown musically.

This part of Roast & Rhyme is slowly becoming a big hit. Organizers underestimated the turn-up for the afternoon and had to close the doors at some point. Selector Jay and DJ Alisha kept the crowd dancing until 3 in the morning.

SECURITY

Given the recent healthy and security risks in the country, the organizers didn’t take any chances. Military police was deployed from Munyonyo roundabout and was visible for a 1km stretch. Inside the grounds, no incidents were reported and you could hear a lot of revealers appreciating the level of security both inside and outside of the venue.
