Uganda is among the 35 countries that abstained from voting as the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The resolution title “Aggression against Ukraine”, demanded an immediate halt to the offensive and the withdrawal of all Russian troops.

It was backed by 141 of the assembly’s 193 members, with five votes against the resolution and 35 abstentions.

Uganda, Russia, China, Burundi, Senegal, South Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, Mali, Mozambique, Eritrea, North Korea, and Syria among others abstained from the vote.

Kenya, Ghana, Gabon, Rwanda, Djibouti, Congo, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo voted yes.

Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN said; “As incoming Chair of the Non- Aligned Movement (NAM) neutrality is key. Uganda will continue to play a constructive role in the maintenance of peace and security both regionally and globally.”

Though Uganda has not formally stated its stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the First Son and commander of Land Forces suggested that Russia had valid “security” reasons to invade Ukraine.
