Gen Kulayigye narrates how he lost Shs200m in gold scam, reveals that Gen Tumukunde ordered the release of the “thief”

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye has admitted to having tried to deal in the gold business.

Speaking in an interview on local television, Kulayigye said that his first deal turned out to be regretful as he lost Shs200m.

“The first time I tried to deal in gold, we were scammed,” said Kulayigye before disclosing that fellow army officers helped the ‘thief’ to get away with the crime.

“After I helped police track down the man and got him arrested, a fellow officer in uniform helped him get released. In fact, Gen Henry Tumukunde ordered his release and picked him up from custody on a Sunday, “he said.

In 2016, Kulayigye was suspended from the office of chief political commissar over his alleged involvement in a gold scandal.

Kulayigye was accused of kidnapping employees of Richard Kamugisha, a businessman, and looting the premises in relation to a gold deal believed to total up to $62,000.
