Following the arrest of Opposition leader Rtd. Col. Kizza Besigye on May 21 at Arua Park, he was detained and arraigned before court on May 25. He was charged with inciting violence.

The former presidential candidate who is currently remanded in Luzira Prison was granted a cash bail of Shs30 million by Buganda Road Magistrate Siena Owomugisha which he rejected on grounds that it was too much. He directed his lawyers led by Erias Lukwago to appeal against the bail. He is set to appear in court again on June 16.

However, today his party Forum for Democratic Change, has recalled how their leader was also in Luzira on this same day six years ago.

“Our founding President Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye penned this on this day in 2016 when he was in Luzira Prison on treason charges after swearing in as President. Today after six years, he’s in Luzira Prison charged with inciting violence. Hang in there Doctor, we must recover this country,” FDC posted.

Despite being arrested a record number of times over the years, the veteran politician has never been convicted of any crime.
