It might seem a farfetched dream but Uganda is surely contemplating about hosting the 2027 AFCON and plans are already in the pipeline, according to FUFA President, Hon. Moses Hassim Magogo.

Magogo’s comments come a few days after the National Council of Sports (NCS), General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel made the revelation while speaking on NBS Sport.

Ogwel said that President Museveni has already ‘informally’ requested the NCS to look into the issue of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

“President Museveni has informally requested us to look into the issue of Uganda hosting the African Cup of nations for 2027, this shows the strides we are taking in sports”, he said.

Magogo has further confirmed the developments and explained that Uganda is strategizing to co-host the 2027 AFCON with neighbors Tanzania.

Magogo who is also a CAF Executive Committee Member explained that they have already engaged Tanzania on the issue but both countries have to consent to the ideal before they officially submit their bid.

According to Magogo, each country (Tanzania and Uganda) is required to have three stadiums in order to be in a position to prepare the co-hosting bid.

About the issue of Uganda lacking stadiums that can host international games, Magogo said.

“If we can have Namboole renovated to the best standards, there is St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende, Buhinga, Masaka Recreation Ground plus Akii Bua are already in plan and if we can add one or two structures, then we can have the capacity to host.”

He further revealed that parliament is already in the know about the plans.
