The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has revealed that the cabinet approved the adoption of Kiswahili as an official language.

While addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala this afternoon, Baryomunsi said that during the cabinet sitting on Monday, they approved the use of Kiswahili as a national language and will make it compulsory and examinable in schools.

Uganda’s decision is in line with the directive of the 21st East African Community (EAC) Summit held in February 2021 that directed the expedition of the implementation of Kiswahili, English, and French as official languages in the bloc.
