Democratic Party president Norbert Mao has dared any other opposition party to try and negotiate a better cooperation agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Last week, DP and NRM signed a cooperation agreement and the decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some describing it as a political betrayal, while others say it is a sign of political maturity.

However, speaking during an interview, Mao claimed that their decision should be appreciated and respected.

“It is not easy to negotiate with President Museveni. He’s not going to roll over for you. He knows what he wants and is unwilling to compromise on what is key to him,” said Mao.

He said the decision to work with Museveni and NRM was to put them into focus.

“People are saying I am not trustworthy. I want them to ask President Museveni about that. The only way to know if President Museveni is trustworthy is to trust him.

We have decided to put our trust in President Museveni. It’s up to him to betray us. He has also put his trust in us. It’s up to us to betray him,” he said.
