A man has been shot dead by the police’s Flying Squad during an intelligence-led operation at Gganda village in Nansana Subcounty, Wakiso district.

The incident happened on Friday at about 2:35 PM following the theft of a motor vehicle, UAQ 571 B, belonging to a journalist. The vehicle was stolen on Thursday from the city centre while parked in the city parking space.

The deputy Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said that the journalist reported the incident to Central Police Station (CPS), and an investigation was instituted immediately.

“Our officers from the flying squad were able to extract footage from the nearby CCTV cameras,” he said.

Owoyesigyire explained that they were able to identify the suspect as a one Busingye Lawrence Amoti Alias Mutooro, who was found to be a notorious robber that has been engaging in activities of theft of motor vehicles and has on several occasions been arrested and released on bail by courts of law.

“He was pursued by the task team from the Flying Squad Unit until on Friday in Gganda where bullets were fired and, unfortunately, one wounded him. He later succumbed to bullet injuries at the scene,” he said.

His body was later conveyed to the city mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem.

The vehicle, which is suspected to have been stolen by Mutooro has also been recovered at the crime scene in Gganda, Nansana.
