All school visitation days and leavers’ celebrations have been postponed by the Ministry of Education and Sports for the upcoming month while students take their PLE, UCE, and UACE national end-of-year exams.

“As you are aware, the country is experiencing an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease. Given that some positive cases have now been confirmed among learners from families of known contacts, it is necessary to strengthen the existing infection prevention measures at the school level,” said education official Ismael Mulindwa in a circular to all schools from the office of the ministry’s Permanent Secretary.

“In this regard, the Ministry of Education and Sports has, with immediate effect, suspended all school visitation days and leavers’ parties until the end of the current school term.”

According to this circular, no events—not even planned graduation ceremonies for nursery schools or PTA general meetings—will be held in schools this year.

95 people have been infected with Ebola in Uganda as of this writing, 15 of whom live in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The 300 contacts of the 15 confirmed Ebola cases in Kampala are being sought after, according to the Health Ministry’s most recent announcement.
