At least six people have been confirmed dead and 40 injured after two buses collided heads on along Ntungamo-Kabale Road. The fatal accident happened this morning.

The accident involved Volcano Bus Company’s motor vehicle registration number RAD798B HYUNDAI bus and Oxygen Bus Company’s motor vehicle registration number KCU054L (SCANIA).

According to police, Murara Alphonse, a Rwandan driver of Volcano Bus, and Omido David, a Kenyan and the driver of the Oxygen bus, both died on the spot, and the other four were Ishingiro Mustafa, a Rwandan; Gakulu Cloude, the conductor of the Oxygen bus; Hakizimana Etiene, a Rwandan passenger aboard Volcano Bus; and a yet-to-be-identified Burundian female passenger who was aboard the Oxygen bus.

The over 40 passengers whose particulars are yet to be established were rushed to Lotom Health Centre in Muhanga.

Police attribute the cause of the accident to reckless driving by the driver of the Volcano bus, who, eyewitnesses say, was from Kampala side but left his side and was driving from the right where he met an on-coming Oxygen bus from Kabale side whose driver tried to swerve to his extreme left in order to dodge the Volcano bus in vain, thus causing a head-on collision.

The bodies of the deceased have all been conveyed to the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
