The jailed Makindye West MP, Allan Ssewanyana, was reportedly in critical condition on Wednesday.

Reports indicated that Ssewanyana was transferred from Kigo Prison to Murchison Bay Hospital in Luzira Prison.

According to sources, Kigo Prison doctors initially thought the MP had ulcers; however, as his condition quickly worsened, they rushed him to Murchison Bay Hospital.

Erias Lukwago, Ssewanyana’s lawyer, made the decision to visit Luzira prison to see how his client was doing.

“The situation is really worrying. He looks to be in a lot of pain, especially chest pain. This suggests maybe his internal organs, like the heart, have complications,” said Lukwago.

He added, “His body is all swollen, and he could hardly talk.”

Lukwago went on to say that the MP had told them he had not yet undergone any tests.

Lukwago claimed that Herbert Kaheru, the officer in charge of the Luzira Maximum Security Upper Prison, had assured them that he would speak with his superiors and they would work out a plan to transfer Ssewanyana to Mulago for an accurate diagnosis.

“We want to engage the Commissioner General of Prison so that he is taken for a better examination at Mulago Hospital,” he said.

Ssewanyana and his co-accused, Muhammad Ssegirinya, have been in prison for over a year. The two are being accused of being masterminds behind the killings in greater Masaka that claimed the lives of at least 26 residents between February and August last year.
