President Kagame: When I retire, I want to become a journalist

Rwandan President Paul Kagame said that he is looking forward to retiring after 23 years in power.

Speaking during a joint conference with Kenyan President William Ruto on Tuesday, Kagame said that his Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) party has been discussing a succession plan for the last thirteen years.

The 65-year-old, who has been the president of Rwanda since 2000 said that he is not necessarily interested in choosing his successor.

“I don’t want to decide who is going to be the next leader after me, but create an environment that will give rise to people who can lead irrespective of whether I like them or not,” Kagame said.

Kagame has already imagined his future career after retiring.

“I’m sure one day I may join journalism in my old age. I’m looking forward to that,” he said.
