A group of passionate Ugandan runners is gearing up to take on the challenging 90-kilometer Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Scheduled for Sunday, June 11, in Durban, this year’s marathon has attracted over 2,000 participants from various countries.

The team of nine Ugandans, led by captain Robert Okudi, consists of Andu Debebe, Moses Rutahigwa, Charles Mugambe, Janet Nakkazi, Gaddafi Ssali, Godfrey Kamya, Daniel Ligyalingi, Amos Nuwagaba, Martin Abila, and Girum Fisseha. On Tuesday, they were ceremoniously flagged off at the Rozaho Bistro restaurant in Kololo.

Representing Team Matooke, a running club based in Kampala, these dedicated Ugandan runners will join 2,354 international participants from 84 countries in their quest to conquer the 90-kilometer distance. The event will be broadcast live on the Supersport Variety 4 channel.

The prestigious Comrades Marathon, which dates back to 1921, was established to honour South African soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. Over the years, more than 300,000 runners have successfully completed the race.

Participants have a time limit of 12 hours to complete the challenging course. The spirit of the Comrades Marathon embodies qualities of camaraderie, selflessness, dedication, perseverance, and humanity.

Andu Debebe, one of the most experienced runners on Uganda’s team, expressed his excitement for his fourth Comrades Marathon, stating that each attempt feels like a new adventure.

“The Comrades Marathon holds a special place in my heart due to its rich history and the sheer distance. It compels you to keep coming back for more,” he said.

Team captain Robert Okudi shared their target, saying, “Every runner aims to cross the finish line of the race they compete in. Our goal is to complete this particular marathon within 10-11 hours.”

Heading to South Africa, these determined Ugandan runners are ready to embrace the challenge and make their mark.
