Students killed in Kasese school attack identified; 20 suspects arrested

A tragic incident happened at Lhubirira Secondary School in Mpondwe, Kasese, where suspected ADF rebels carried out a brutal attack on Friday night. As a result, 42 lives were lost, including 37 students, prompting the arrest of 20 people, including the headmaster and director of the school.

During the attack, a group of suspected ADF fighters stormed the school under the cover of darkness. They unleashed gunfire into the girls’ dormitory and also hurled a bomb into the boys’ dormitory.

Providing an update on Monday, police spokesperson Fred Enanga shared grim details of the incident. The bodies of 25 victims have undergone postmortem examinations at Bwera Hospital. The list of the deceased includes;

18. Biira Amina Rashid, a 17-year-old female juvenile.

19. Masereka Zakayo, a 70-year-old, male peasant.

20. Masika Florence, a 95-year-old, female peasant

21. Ithungu Regina, a 16-year-old, female student

22.Kabugo Masiline, an 18 year old female, S.1 student

23. Ithungu Mackline, a 12-year-old, female student in S.1

24. Khabugho Janet, a 16year old, female student in S.1

25. Khabugho Bridget Deya, a 16-year-old, female student

Of the burnt bodies recovered, all 17 were male. Forensic teams collected DNA samples from both the bodies and their relatives for identification purposes.

At present, six injured individuals remain hospitalized. Four are receiving treatment at Bwera Hospital, one was transferred to Kiruddu Hospital for severe burns, and another was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a head injury.

The injured include Aliganyira Wilfred (21 years old), Tumwebaze Godwin (32 years old), Mbambu Felistus (50 years old), Kule Erias (18 years old), Mumbere Godwin (16 years old), and Isingoma Julius (21 years old).

Among the survivors are Mumbere Edgar, Kato Moses, Muhindo Steven, and Kambesa Gideon.

There is heavy security deployment at Lhubirira Secondary School and the surrounding areas as investigations continue.
