Former Inspector General of Police, General Kale Kayihura, is scheduled to retire from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in August, as confirmed by UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye in a statement this afternoon.

Kayihura is among 11 generals who have received approval from the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to retire from the army.

While facing charges at the General Court Martial, recent reports circulated regarding a meeting between the General Court Martial and President Museveni concerning the criminal charges against Kayihura. These reports stated that Museveni agreed to drop the charges against him.

Kayihura was charged with failure to protect war materials, failure to supervise police officers, and abetting kidnapping. He has been out on bail since 2020, awaiting further proceedings.

In addition to Kayihura, the retirement approvals include Lt Gen James Nakibus Lakara, Maj Gen Samuel Wasswa Mutesasira, Maj Gen Joseph Arocha, Maj Gen David Wakaalo, Brig Gen Austine Kasatwooki Kamanyire, Brig Gen Stephen Oluka, Brig Gen Frank Katende Kyambadde, Brig Gen Emmanuel Kwihangana, Brig Gen Wilson Muhabuzi, and Brig Gen Ham Atwoki Kaija.

Furthermore, 99 other senior officers have also received approval to retire. The statement issued by the UPDF expressed gratitude for the services rendered by these officers during their active duty and extended well wishes for their retirement.

“We appreciate the dedication and service of these officers to their country during their time in active service and wish them all the best in their retirement,” the statement concluded.
