Police in Kanungu have apprehended Agaba Onacklet, a 46-year-old man for allegedly strangling his 10-year-old son, Ivan Nuwagaba over Shs500.

The incident happened on Sunday, July 2, 2023, around 1:00 pm, within Kanyangyende village, Northern ward, Kanungu town council.

Reports suggest that Onacklet had sent his son to purchase cigarettes worth Shs1000. However, the son bought cigarettes worth only Shs500 and consumed the remaining balance. This action angered the father, who, in response, threatened to kill him.

Fearful for his safety, the son fled from his father until Sunday when Onacklet allegedly strangled him to death using a rope. Afterwards, he hanged the lifeless body on a mango tree, attempting to stage the incident as a suicide.

Hellen Ayebare, the local area chairperson, promptly notified the police, who swiftly arrived at the crime scene. They documented the evidence and proceeded to conduct a postmortem examination.

Onacklet was arrested and is currently in custody, awaiting prosecution.

The victim, Ivan Nuwagaba, was a student at Karuhinda Primary School and a resident of Kazirankye village, Northern ward, Kanungu town council, Kanungu district.
