The government has once again extended the deadline for the completion of the renovation works on Namboole Stadium.

Initially, the UPDF Engineering Brigade, responsible for the project, had stated that the stadium would be ready by last month. However, during her visit to the stadium on Monday, Education and Sports Minister Janet Museveni revealed that the actual deadline had been set for August but has now been moved up to November.

First Lady Janet Museveni (with a hat), Sports Minister Peter Ogwang, FUFA President Moses Magogo and the UPDF Engineering Brigade officers conversing during the visit on Monday.

Acknowledging the significant efforts being made, Minister Janet stated, “In light of these substantial undertakings, I have approved an extension for these intervention efforts, shifting the initial completion date from August 1st, 2023, to November 30th, 2023.”

The decision to extend the deadline was made in response to a request by the project’s main contractor, the UPDF Engineering Brigade. The minister expressed anticipation for the next visit in November, where they hope to witness the fully revitalized stadium.

Last year, the government entrusted the renovation duties of Namboole Stadium to the UPDF Engineering Brigade after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) declared the stadium unfit to host any international matches. CAF’s report highlighted various deficiencies, including the playing surface, pitch size, dressing rooms, floodlights, pavilion, technical bench, media center, and parking facilities.

Having undergone minimal renovations for over two decades, the stadium was closed down and handed over to the UPDF Engineering Brigade for extensive restoration work. The renovation plan encompasses several crucial upgrades to the stadium. These include the implementation of a state-of-the-art ticketing and access control system, installation of solar lighting to reduce utility costs, and the establishment of an efficient drainage and irrigation system.

Furthermore, the projects involve the construction of a 4.2km perimeter wall, as well as the refurbishment and elevation of the stadium and hotel to meet international standards.
