The police have spoken out on a road accident at Itojo along Ntungamo-Mbarara Road that claimed the life of businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, also known as Aponye.

According to Rwizi Region police spokesperson Kasasira Samson, the tragic road accident happened at around 9pm. It involved two motor vehicles bearing registration numbers UBF 300Z (Land Cruiser) and UAZ 767D (FUSO).

He said that their preliminary investigations reveal that the Land Cruiser (Aponye’s car) heading towards Kabale, rammed into a stationary FUSO truck.

The FUSO truck had encountered a mechanical problem and was parked alongside the road in Itojo along the Ntungamo-Mbarara Road.

Aponye succumbed to his injuries in the accident. Two other individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Aponye was a well-known businessman, renowned for his ownership of Aponye Mall in downtown Kampala and Mega Standard Supermarket, along with another Aponye Mall located in the heart of Ntinda. He had gained attention due to his involvement in supplying COVID-19 relief food, which sparked controversy surrounding the selection process and the quality of the distributed supplies.

Furthermore, Aponye held the position of NRM chairman for Rukiga District.
