Relatives of Kawempe North legislator Muhammad Ssegirinya have issued an ultimatum of one week to Parliament, demanding the allocation of Shs80 million for the MP’s mounting medical expenses.

Ssegirinya was compelled to seek treatment overseas after his condition deteriorated beyond manageable levels in Uganda.

Alex Luwemba, Ssegirinya’s personal assistant, disclosed during a press conference in Kawempe that daily medical bills continue to accumulate. To meet these escalating expenses, they have resorted to selling off his assets to moneylenders in order to raise funds.

Luwemba expressed disappointment that while parliament has consistently approved medical expenses for other MPs seeking treatment abroad, they have not addressed Ssegirinya’s urgent medical situation. He conveyed their intention to formally write to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martine Okoth Ochola, seeking permission to organize a public fundraising event should parliament fail to respond within the stipulated one-week timeframe.

“The financial burden is immense. Foreign hospitals do not offer the same affordability as our domestic ones. Currently, he is under care at UMC Hospital in the Netherlands, having been transferred from Germany. We are granting parliament one week to respond. If there is no resolution by Friday, we will initiate a fundraising effort,” Luwemba stated.

Currently, Ssegirinya is undergoing medical treatment at UMC Hospital in Amsterdam.
