Police in Kakiri have arrested Nasuuna Harriet, a 38-year-old resident of Nampunge village in Kakiri sub-county, Wakiso district, on charges linked to human trafficking.

The arrest comes after vigilant whistleblowers tipped off the police about her alleged involvement in an elaborate scheme targeting individuals aged 18 and above, promising them lucrative employment prospects across borders.

Following a tip-off, the police arrested Nasuuna. During interrogation, she reportedly told the police that she had orchestrated the recruitment of youths hailing from different regions within Uganda, including Nansana, Kyengera, Bukomero, Butambala, Kasese, Fort Portal, Kyegegwa, and beyond. These unsuspecting victims were enticed with the allure of a brighter future under the pretext of job opportunities in Kenya.

“The suspect’s residence had become a gathering point for both male and female victims, eagerly awaiting transportation to Nairobi, Kenya,” said the police.

The suspect also disclosed she was operating under the direction of an 18-year-old named Mugenyi William from Kapeka Semuto in Nakaseke district. Mugenyi, a student at Kapeka Secondary School, purportedly acted as an agent on behalf of his sister, identified as Carol, who was reportedly connected with the Humble Company in Nairobi, Kenya.

The police successfully rescued a total of 179 victims (99 males and 80 females). The police are in the process of returning them to their respective homes.
