Fun Factory, Uganda’s renowned comedy group, is gearing up to mark a remarkable milestone – 20 years of providing weekly laughter to audiences.

The grand celebration, known as the “Big Sunday Comedy Show,” is set to take place on October 1st, 2023, at the Kampala Serena Hotel. This laughter-filled extravaganza is proudly sponsored by Uganda Waragi.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the National Theatre, featuring Fun Factory members and representatives from Uganda Breweries Limited, the creators of Uganda Waragi.

The “Big Sunday Comedy Show” promises to bring together comedy enthusiasts who have shared countless laughs with Fun Factory over the years.

From their humble beginnings at TLC in 2003 to their current weekly “Comedicine” show at the National Theatre, Fun Factory has been a constant source of humour for its fans.

The star-studded event will showcase performances by some of Uganda’s comedic royalty, including Richard Tuwangye, Isaac Kuddzu, Frobisher Lwanga, Veronica Kiwanuka, Dickson Zizinga, and many others.

Richard Tuwangye addressing the media at the Big Sunday Comedy press briefing at National Theater yesterday.

Richard Tuwangye, one of Fun Factory’s founding members, expressed his excitement about the milestone, saying, “Big Sunday is going to be a one-of-a-kind grand comedy show to celebrate 20 years of weekly comedy. Our journey has been filled with both ups and downs, but above all, we have delivered laughter to millions of Ugandans, and this is the biggest point of pride for us.”

Fun Factory’s weekly sketch comedy shows made their debut in October 2003, under the guidance of University Lecturer and theater maestro, Philip Luswata.

After a period of slow growth and talent turnover, their big break arrived in 2007 with NTV’s “BarbedWire,” the only sketch comedy show on TV at the time, which aired every Sunday at 7:30 pm.

Tuwangye added, “It was from this point that the comedy scene entered the fast lane and has been growing ever since. After 20 years of weekly comedy, we feel that celebrations are in order. This is a dream come true for us, to see just how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown as artists, and I appreciate all those who have stood with us through the years.”

Denis Wokorach, a representative from Uganda Breweries Limited at the Big Comedy Presser at National Theater.

Denis Wokorach, a representative from Uganda Breweries Limited, emphasized the brand’s commitment to supporting Ugandan comedy, stating, “Uganda Waragi is the spirit of Uganda that boldly celebrates everything that is uniquely and authentically Ugandan. This is the main reason behind our coming forward as the biggest supporter of Ugandan comedy thanks to the industry’s ability to bring Ugandans together under the spirit of laughter and togetherness while providing a platform for talented Ugandan comedians to share their talents with the world.”

Uganda Waragi has been a staunch supporter of various comedy shows, including Fun Factory’s “Comedicine,” Alex Muhangi’s “Comedy Store UG,” Salvado’s “Africa Laughs,” Madrat and Chiko’s “Nseko Buseko,” MC Kash’s “Laugh with Owakabi,” among others. As part of the “Big Sunday Comedy Show,” Uganda Waragi will offer a top-of-the-line cocktail experience curated by their world-class team of mixologists.

The event is co-sponsored by Next Media, Serena Hotels, Quicket, and Vanvaa. Tickets are available at www.quicket.co.ug and come in packages ranging from Shs120k for silver, Shs200k for gold, and Shs2.5m for a platinum table. Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of laughter and celebration as Fun Factory marks two decades of comedic excellence.
