As the country gears up for festive season the Traffic Police have activated all Fika Salaama points and speeding zones in a bid to enhance the traffic operations on all major highways across the country.

Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Traffic Police, highlighted the common challenges faced during the festive season, including over speeding, inexperienced drivers, vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition, and drivers under the influence of alcohol. In response to these concerns, the police have intensified operations to minimize the occurrence of road accidents during this period.

To address the issue of drink driving, Kananura announced that drivers of passenger service vehicles, especially bus drivers, will undergo alcohol testing at the activated Fika Salaama checkpoints. This measure aims to eliminate the risks associated with intoxicated driving, which often result in tragic consequences for passengers.

In addition to the increased presence at checkpoints, the Traffic Police will deploy additional foot and motorized patrols on the roads. Kananura emphasized the importance for all road users to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles, promoting a safer environment for everyone during the festive season.

Despite these efforts, the past week has seen a concerning number of road accidents, with a total of 390 incidents recorded, leading to the loss of 73 lives.

The Traffic Police’s intensified measures seek to reverse this trend and create a safer travel environment for all during the upcoming celebrations.
