Members of Parliament who are set to represent Uganda at the East African Games in Rwanda will receive $720 (approximately Shs2.7 million) per day, as announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.

However, Among warned them against shaming their country by staying in cheap hotels, emphasizing that the $720 per diem should be sufficient for them to secure decent accommodations rather than opting for hotels priced at US$20 (about Shs75,533).

“I want to encourage MPs that as you go there, represent Uganda well in terms of discipline. I am giving you $720 per day, and you go and sleep in a room that costs $20. That is unacceptable for a Member of Parliament. Members, go and represent us well; don’t live miserably,” she said.

This morning, the Speaker flagged off the sports teams representing Uganda at the EAC games. The games are scheduled to kick off on Friday and will run until December 18 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Sports Club, promised to ensure that Uganda defends its title as the champions and maintains the country’s positive image at the games.

“The teams have trained, the coaches have done their best, and what we can promise you is victory. As you flag us off, we want to confirm that we will keep a very good image of the Parliament of Uganda; we will not disappoint you, and we will not disappoint our country,” said Basalirwa.

The MPs will be competing in various activities, including football, volleyball, netball, and athletics, among other games.
