Makerere University has officially opened nominations for the position of Chancellor, seeking a replacement for Professor Ezra Suruma, whose term expires this month.

In a letter dated December 11, signed by Simon Kizito on behalf of University Secretary Yusuf Kiranda, the university invites nominations for the prestigious position.

“The position does not attract a salary. However, the successful candidate will be facilitated whenever he/she attends official duties and is entitled to a retainer allowance at a rate approved by the University Council,” reads part of the circular.

Professor Suruma, who succeeded Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, has served in the role for the past eight years since his initial appointment in 2016. He was subsequently reappointed in December 2019.

The Chancellor holds the honorary position as the titular head of the University, presiding over all ceremonial assemblies and conferring degrees, academic titles, and distinctions. The appointment of the Chancellor is made by the President upon the recommendation of the University Council.

According to the eligibility criteria outlined in the circular, applicants must be citizens of Uganda, possess at least a bachelor’s degree from a recognized higher institution of learning, and be eminent individuals of high integrity with good public relations.

The circular further stipulates that applicants must be between the ages of 55 and 75 at the time of nomination, should not currently hold the position of chancellor, vice chancellor, or staff member at any academic institution, and must not be a registered student in Uganda.
