Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has announced a calendar adjustment for the 74th Graduation ceremony. The ceremony is now scheduled to take place between January 29, 2024, and February 2, 2024.

This decision, communicated through a letter to the Academic Registrar, Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, dated December 15, 2023, comes after a series of changes.

Initially slated for January 8 to January 12, 2024, the ceremony faced necessary adjustments due to the anticipated Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit to avoid scheduling conflicts. The university had then gazetted January 22-26, 2024, as the new dates for the graduation ceremony. However, the calendar has once again been modified.

In a statement, Prof. Nawangwe, who serves as the chairperson of the senate, explained, “After consultations with key stakeholders, I am rescheduling the 74th graduation ceremony to commence on Monday, January 29, 2024, and end on February 2, 2024.”

He urged individuals to make necessary arrangements accordingly, according to the letter addressed to the university’s academic registrar.

Although the letter did not specify the exact reason for the postponement, reports suggest that concerns raised by various colleges and stakeholders regarding their readiness to host the graduation might be a contributing factor. Additionally, there are indications that the extension may allow students more time to clear outstanding fees.

The upcoming graduation is expected to see over 10,000 students graduate in various programs at the university.
