Police in Kampala have arrested a man who has been using social media platforms to befriend women, and later steal from them when he meets them privately.

Fred Enanga, the Police spokesman, revealed that the suspect, identified as Odongkara Steven, a resident of Bulenga, was arrested following a case reported by Namiiro Jennifer. She alleged that the suspect used a knife to steal her belongings after they met.

“While escorting each other, the suspect drew out a knife and stabbed the victim on the right hand, then grabbed her bag, and escaped from the scene,” explained Enanga.

The bag contained Shs200,000 in cash and cosmetics.

The police initiated a pursuit of the suspect, leading to his arrest on December 27. A subsequent search resulted in the recovery of a knife from him.

Enanga stated that the suspect confessed to luring girls and women on Facebook and robbing them. The victims were compelled to surrender their bags, phones, and other valuables.

“We urge girls, women, and others seeking love online to proceed with caution when meeting individuals from dating sites,” advised Enanga.
