Police in Kanyanya are detaining Kato John Ssemfuma, a 40-year-old teacher at Hillside High School in Mityana. The teacher was arrested after a video of his ‘interrogation’ by the student’s guardian went viral on social media.
Ssemfuma, a resident of Mukono, was apprehended on allegations of attempting to defile a 15-year-old girl, a student at the school where he teaches.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Sheilah, a 26-year-old resident of Kyebando Erisa Zone in Kawempe Division, Kampala District, who is one of the guardians of the student.
Sheilah reported that the family became aware of Ssemfuma’s communication with the student through WhatsApp, and he was lured into visiting the student.
On January 13, 2024, Ssenfuma travelled to the student’s guardian’s home and was subsequently apprehended upon arrival.
“An examination by a Police surgeon confirmed the well-being of the victim, as the intended activity did not transpire,” said the police.
However, the investigating officers found the teacher with unused ‘Kiss’ condoms and Shs1,000.
The case file was submitted to the office of the Resident State Attorney, and the Kanyanya Police received guidance on the next steps. The file is pending resubmission for sanctioning, and the suspect will face charges as determined by the Prosecution.
