Uganda’s rich history and cultural diversity are set to be unveiled in the groundbreaking docuseries “Tuko Pamoja” (We Are One), directed by Dr. Cindy Magara and produced by Nyati Motion Pictures. The series is scheduled for a cinematic premiere with 13 launches taking place from February to June 2024.

Written by Rogers Atukunda, the film delves into the geopolitical and geolinguistic aspects of Uganda between 1870 and 1900, exploring the historical connections among the peoples of the Great Lakes Region. Dr. Magara, a distinguished Lecturer of Film and Literature at Makerere University, has crafted an insightful narrative that highlights the unity in diversity within Uganda.

Nyati Motion Pictures, a pioneering Ugandan film production company since 2006, has a notable track record with films like “Fate” (2006), “Fair Play” (2010), and “Windows of Hope” (2011). Renowned for breaking new ground, Nyati produced Uganda’s first independent professional film, “Fate,” which screened at Cineplex and on DStv’s African Magic in 2007. The company is currently working on an extensive project to bring Uganda’s history to the big screen.

Dr Cindy Evelyn Magara, Director and Executive Producer.

Director Dr. Cindy Magara emphasized the relevance of “Tuko Pamoja” in fostering cohesion, stating, “This film aims to foster cohesion since our pre-colonial history shows that we are one.” She underscored the importance of understanding pre-colonial history to counteract the division sown by colonialists.

“The colonialists wanted to see us divided on tribal lines to subjugate us. When we all know this history, it will reduce ethnic tensions,” she added.

The docuseries addresses contemporary East Africa’s quest for unity through organizations like the East African Community and the African Union. Dr. Magara believes retracing historical footsteps will provide valuable insights into democracy, neo-colonialism, integration, peace, and stability.

Nyati crew interviewing Isaac Kalembe, the author of Omukama Kabaleega’s biography at Kibiro salt mines.

A sneak peek of the series is available on Nyati Motion Pictures’ YouTube channel, and the premieres kick off at the National Theatre, with subsequent screenings at Ndere Centre. Weekly screenings of each segment will follow at Ham Cinemax (Wandegeya) and Makerere University (Food Science, auditorium) from February 4 to June 8, 2024. The film will later be screened in major towns across the country, promising an immersive experience for audiences eager to connect with Uganda’s vibrant history.
