President Yoweri Museveni yesterday hosted a luncheon at State House in Entebbe to express gratitude and celebrate the success of the recently concluded Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 plus China (G77+China) summits. The luncheon, attended by key organizers and contributors to the events, provided an opportunity for reflection and future planning.

Museveni, accompanied by First Lady Mama Janet, extended his appreciation to the National Organizing Committee, led by Lucy Nakyobe and Adonia Ayebare, for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the success of the summits. During the gathering, Museveni emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum and delivering not only successful summits but also meaningful content to the global community.

President Museveni and Mama Janet cut the cake with organising committee leaders Adonia Ayebare (L) and Lucy Nakyobe (2L).

“I thank all the people who worked with Lucy Nakyobe and Adonia Ayebare to deliver this success and ask that the momentum be kept so that, during our tenure, Uganda shall deliver, not only good summits but good content to the world,” remarked President Museveni.

Museveni highlighted key principles such as vision, ideology, patriotism, and prioritization. He drew parallels between historical decisions, such as rejecting Amin’s ideological bankruptcy, and present achievements, citing examples like businessman Sudhir Ruparelia who constructed the Speke Resort Munyonyo Convention Centre that hosted the summits.

Business mogul Sudhir Ruparelia and his wife Jyostna were recognised at the luncheon.

“Sudhir wouldn’t be here if we didn’t reject Amin’s ideological bankruptcy,” noted Museveni, underscoring the importance of principled decisions in shaping Uganda’s trajectory.

Museveni, who was named chairman of both NAM and G77+China during the conferences, outlined the four main focus areas for his chairmanship. These include working towards global peace, promoting South-to-South investments in goods and services production, enhancing market linkages between countries, and improving infrastructure investments.
