10 dead, 25 injured in Rakai road crash

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, while 25 others were injured following a road crash along Kyalulangira-Isingiro Road. The accident, which involved motor vehicle UAP 559X Canter, occurred on Tuesday at around 01:30 pm.

According to the police, the driver of the aforementioned motor vehicle was carrying 35 people who were heading to Isingiro. However, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn, instantly killing 10 people and injuring 25 others.

The traffic police responded to the scene, and the victims were first rushed to Kyalulangira H/C III before being transferred to Rakia Hospital for treatment.

The driver is reported to have fled, and the police have already launched a hunt for him as investigations into the cause of this crash have commenced.

According to the 2023 Police annual report, Uganda recorded a 30 per cent increase in road fatalities registered with the police in 2023, with 4,179 lives lost.

The report also indicated that a total of 23,608 road crashes were recorded in 2023 compared to 20,394 cases registered in 2022.

To curb the alarming accident rates, the police stated that they had resorted to the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations through operations targeting commercial motorcycle riders, commuter passenger taxis, and other risk factors such as speeding and drunk driving.
