The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced a major milestone in the rehabilitation of the Karuma Bridge, with the successful completion of asphalt laying on the bridge deck and approach roads.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), UNRA confirmed that the long-awaited project is now in its final stages, signaling a swift return to normalcy for one of Uganda’s most vital transportation links.

The State Minister for Works, Musa Ecweru, is scheduled to visit the site today to oversee the progress and provide important updates for travelers.

His visit will also include sharing guidelines to ensure a smooth transition as the bridge prepares to reopen to traffic.

UNRA extended its gratitude to the public for their patience during the repair process. “We appreciate the public for their continued patience as we work to restore seamless connectivity,” the authority stated.

Karuma Bridge, a critical part of the Kampala-Gulu highway, was closed in May this year after significant structural cracks were identified, prompting safety concerns.

The closure disrupted travel and commerce in northern Uganda, forcing road users to rely on alternative routes that increased journey times and costs.

Now, with repairs in their advanced stages, the bridge’s reopening is expected to bring much-needed relief to thousands of travelers and businesses, restoring efficient transportation of goods and services across the region.
