MP Ssegirinya Muhammad, ‘Mr. Update,’ passes away after prolonged illness

Ssegirinya Muhammad, also known as “Mr. Update,” the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, is dead.

“Ssegirinya has been under the dedicated care of our medical team at Lubaga Hospital. Despite all efforts to ensure his recovery, he passed away today, Thursday, 9th January 2025, at 12:10 pm,” said Lubaga Hospital in a statement.

Ssegirinya had been bedridden, battling various health complications since he was released from prison two years ago.

Since his release, Ssegirinya had been in and out of hospitals, battling lung disease, hypertension, skin cancer, and other complications.

In mid-last year, he was rushed to Germany and later transferred to Amsterdam UMC Hospital in the Netherlands as his condition had worsened beyond what could be managed in Uganda. He was discharged from Amsterdam UMC Hospital in September after receiving treatment for various ailments.

However, his health condition deteriorated a few months later, leading to his admission to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he remained for nearly six months until his discharge in June last year.
