The construction of Uganda’s second national stadium in Hoima City is advancing at an extraordinary pace, with Turkish construction giants SUMMA making remarkable progress on the $129 million project.

Originally scheduled for completion within 18 months, on-site assessments suggest the ambitious multi-sports complex could be delivered ahead of schedule. Since breaking ground in July 2024, the Hoima Stadium construction site has been abuzz with activity.

During a third inspection on Friday, National Council of Sports (NCS) Assistant General Secretary for Administration Joseph Oluga, Engineering Officer Nicholas Zirimenya, and supervising consultants from the Ministry of Works and Transport expressed their satisfaction with the project’s rapid development.

“We are witnessing impressive strides every day,” noted Oluga. “SUMMA’s commitment to quality and speed is commendable and positions Uganda as a leader in sports infrastructure development in the region.”

The stadium complex, set to transform Hoima into a sporting hub, will include a 20,000-seater stadium and a 2,000-seater indoor multi-sports arena.

Additional facilities such as a training pitch, semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool, a parking lot accommodating over 1,000 vehicles, and outdoor courts for basketball, netball, and volleyball are also taking shape.

These developments come as Hoima prepares to be a key host city for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania. The multi-purpose venue is poised to be a focal point for national and international sporting events.

“This project is about more than just sports; it’s about setting a new standard for infrastructure development in Uganda,” said Zirimenya. “The impact on the local economy, tourism, and sports development will be significant.”

As SUMMA continues its work, anticipation builds for a future where Hoima becomes the heart of Ugandan sport and a beacon for East African athletics.
