EC extends National Voters’ Register Update by seven days

The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended the general update of the national voters’ register by seven days, from Tuesday, February 11, to Monday, February 17, 2025.

Speaking to the media this afternoon at the EC headquarters in Kampala, the Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said this would be the final extension.

“The Commission, taking into account its observations in the field and assessment, as well as appeals from stakeholders, among other reasons, has therefore decided to extend the update exercise for seven (7) days, after which there will be no further extension,” Justice Byabakama said.

He explained that the extension aims to allow eligible unregistered voters to complete their registration.

During this period, the exercise will continue to be conducted at update stations from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day, including weekends.

Byabakama stated that since the 2021 general elections, the voters’ register has been continuously updated by extracting the voting particulars of citizens who have been registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), verified as citizens, and have provided a preferred polling station (either parish of origin or parish of residence).

He added that as of today, the national voters’ register stands at 19,925,574 voters, up from the 18,103,603 voters registered for the 2020/2021 general elections.
