Speke Resort Munyonyo successfully hosted the 22nd African Water and Sanitation Congress (AfWASA 2025), a four-day event that brought together over 1,000 delegates from more than 40 countries.

Running from February 16 to February 20, the congress served as a crucial platform for discussing solutions to Africa’s pressing water and sanitation challenges.

Representing President Yoweri Museveni, Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama lauded AfWASA’s initiative to establish the African Water and Sanitation Academy (AWASA).

The academy, headquartered at the NWSC International Resource Centre in Bugolobi, Kampala, is expected to play a transformative role in Africa’s ongoing efforts to ensure universal access to clean water, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Six.

According to AfWASA officials, AWASA will focus on capacity building for managers of water and sanitation utilities, industry decision-makers, and sector leaders. The academy aims to provide cutting-edge training by integrating scientific, technical, and governance aspects of water and sanitation management in Africa.

Despite these strides, Africa remains significantly behind in achieving SDG Six, which calls for clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. With only five years left to meet this global commitment, the continent faces a steep challenge—an estimated 440 million people still lack access to clean water, while 779 million lack basic sanitation services.

The establishment of AWASA is expected to be a game-changer, equipping African leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to accelerate progress in water and sanitation services, ultimately improving lives across the continent.

Delegates enjoyed the tranquility and the unparalleled leisure amenities at Speke Resort Munyonyo, a facility known for hosting world-class events.
